The Atlantic Highlands Veterans Affairs Committee (AHVAC) is a voluntary advisory committee. The mission of the AHVAC is to advocate for present and past Veterans of the Borough of Atlantic Highlands as well as to promote and highlight the service, dedication, and sacrifices that Veterans have made for their community and for the nation. The vision of this Committee is to Educate, Empower and Engage our veterans as best we can and to be a valuable resource in helping them improve their quality of life; to create community awareness of the historical significance of Veterans and their contributions.
The AHVAC shall consist of:
- Five (5) members appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council.
- At least three (3) members shall always be veterans of the armed forces.
Terms of Service:
- Two (2) of the five (5) founding members shall serve for terms of three (3) years;
- Two (2) of the five (5) founding members shall serve for terms of two (2) years, and
- One (1) of the five (5) founding members shall serve for a term of one (1) year.
After which all shall serve for staggered terms of three (3) years.
Any vacancies shall only be filled by appointment of the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council for the remainder of the term of the individual having left the seat vacant.
Who is a Veteran?
Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulations defines a veteran as “a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.”
